The South African Boerboel is the only South African dog specifically bred for guarding and protecting without being aggressive. Dating back to 1652, this breed is a descendant of the Boer dog. In the 20th century, the Boerboel was nearly extinct. They were revived, and are steadily gaining in worldwide popularity with dogs being exported and bred in Australia, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Russia, and the U.S.A.
The Boerboel is a big, strong and intelligent working dog. The breed is extremely agile in comparison to their size. Male Boerboels appear noticeably masculine and females feminine. All parts of the body should be in proportion with the other. The head is the most important feature of the Boerboel. The head should be short, wide, deep, square and muscular with well defined cheeks.
The South African Boerboel will do okay with other dogs, cats, and other household pets. They are loving, intelligent, obedient, and affectionate. The South African Boerboel is confident and protective of their family, home, and territory. An uncontrollable or aggressive Boerboel is unacceptable.
